DECEMBER HOLIDAYS

DECEMBER 13 ~ NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY
AND NATIONAL VIOLIN DAY

National Ice Cream and Violin Day

by Tunnel Writer

Catherine looked over the recipe again:

Prep Time: 10 mins
Additional Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 20 mins

Servings: 1

Yield: 1 cup

Ingredients:
¼ cup milk
¼ cup half-and-half
1 tablespoon white sugar
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup ice cubes, or as needed
3 tablespoons ice cream rock salt

Directions:

Combine milk, half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla extract in a pint-size resealable plastic bag; seal tightly.

Put a scoop of ice, 3 tablespoons ice cream rock salt, and the bag containing the milk-cream mixture into a gallon-size resealable plastic bag; seal tightly.

Rock the bag back and forth (do not shake) until contents thicken into ice cream, about 10 minutes. Wipe salt from the top of the pint-size bag before opening to prevent salt from getting into the ice cream.

Eat the ice cream right out of the bag.

Catherine smiled. This is going to be a great treat for those below. After all, it is Ice Cream Day, Catherine thought as she grabbed her shopping list, and calculated how much she’d need for everyone to make their own. She knew she’d have to hit several stores to get enough. She felt giddy as she almost skipped out the door.

Four hours later, Catherine stood back and watched her tunnel family put the ingredients into their bags.

“Catherine, I will make machine. Machine to help make ice cream,” Mouse exclaimed excitedly.

“Thank you, Mouse, but I believe everyone is enjoying making their own,” Catherine said as she saw the disappointment on Mouse’s face. “Perhaps, you could make one for next summer when the weather is hotter?”

Mouse’s face lit up.

“A big one. Need stuff. Ten gallon drum. Maybe fifty. Gadgets, moving parts,” he said as he scampered off.

FIFTY GALLONS? Uh oh, Catherine thought. She opened her mouth to call Mouse back, but a shout interrupted her.

“IT WORKED!!! THIS ACTUALLY WORKED!!” Eric yelled excitedly as he held up his bag of ice cream.

Before long, all the tunnel dwellers were busy eating their now solid ice cream.

“Save the bags!” William boomed. “I’ll wash them, and they can be reused.”

Catherine was confused and walked over to William. “You’re not planning on storing food in them? I can buy you more,” she said with concern.

“Oh no, we’ll find other uses for them. Mary likes them to store buttons and sewing items. The gallon-sized bags are used to keep feet dry.”

Catherine gave him a quizzical look, which made William belly laugh. “Sometimes the children go above when it’s wet; they put them on over their socks before putting shoes on. Keeps their feet dry. There’s many uses for these bags, Catherine, and I assure you they will be completely worn out before they’re thrown away.”

Catherine smiled as her attention was drawn to a group of children huddled together whispering. They nodded, and as a group walked up to Catherine.

“Today is also Violin Day, and there’s going to be a concert in a few minutes. I’m just learning, but I will be playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Anyway, we want to know if you’ll come.” Geoffrey smiled sweetly at her.

Catherine returned the smile. “I’d love to.” Knowing she’d already been told about the concert months ago.

Geoffrey beamed at her as he took her hand and led her to Father’s library.

When the last performer ended, Catherine stood up, and to everyone’s surprise, walked to the front. Father smiled as he handed her a violin. She heard the gasps as she played a simple tune perfectly.

The applause was thundering.

“I didn’t know you could play!” Vincent said, amazed.

“I took a few lessons before my mother died. I’ve been brushing up, and wanted to surprise you,” she said as she lovingly caressed the violin.

“Yes, you did surprise me.” And he gave her a hug.
