DECEMBER HOLIDAYS

DECEMBER 18 ~ BAKE COOKIES DAY

BAKE COOKIES Day

by Tunnel Writer

The children were giddy as William brought out the flour and sugar. This was a yearly tradition they loved. The whole day had been set aside to bake cookies.

Each child had their favorite: chocolate chip, snickerdoodles, M&M, raisin oatmeal, butterscotch chip, and creme de menthe. Due to some nut and sugar allergies, peanut butter had been replaced with applesauce cookies and honey cookies. The children knew that only some of these cookies would be consumed Below. The majority of them would be delivered to their helpers who would be alone on Christmas, and to a couple of nursing homes.

The delicious smells drifted down the tunnels. Small hands would get smacked away as they tried to swipe a cookie. At any given time throughout the day, you could hear the giggles from the children and the frustration from some adults.

The children and adults would only stop long enough to grab a quick meal. William always prepared “grab and go” meals for this day: fresh doughnuts or fruit for breakfast, soups and sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Soups were readily available for warming up, but everyone was on their own.

By bedtime, all the cookies were finished, the kitchen was again spotless, and flour-covered children had been bathed and tucked into bed.

William fell into his chair exhausted. Why do I torture myself every year? Then he chuckled. Because I’m a glutton for punishment. I best get to bed if I’m going to help wrap all those plates of cookies.

[NOT the end. To be continued…]
