DECEMBER HOLIDAYS

DECEMBER 24 ~ CHRISTMAS EVE

A DECEMBER OF HOLIDAYS

by JRo

On Christmas Eve, Catherine turned out the light, then crawled into bed next to Vincent. She laid her head on his chest and they both let out a long sigh.

“I can’t believe tomorrow is Christmas. This month has flown by and I’m exhausted,” she said.

“I know,” said Vincent, “and the children will be up early.”

Catherine let out a short giggle. “It has been an amazing month, too.”

“Yes. I can’t believe we’ve gotten so much use out of that daily holiday calendar that the children gave to Father last Christmas. I believe we’ve celebrated more days than anyone else.”

“Mm hmm. It has been wonderful. In fact, we’ve celebrated almost every day this month, starting with Skip School Day on the 2nd. Technically, you skipped teaching your classes. I just played hooky.”

“Don’t forget Let’s Hug Day on the 3rd,” he said as he tightened his arm around her.

“Of course not. That was a great day. Then there was National Cookie Day on the 4th, when we learned that while cookies in bed are delicious, crumbs in bed are not pleasant.”

Vincent chuckled. “True. However, the 5th was extremely present. Whoever dreamed up Bathtub Party Day was a genius. I’m glad you had plenty of bubble bath on hand.”

She smiled. “Me too. I think we were most inventive on the 8th when we kept repeating the morning over and over on Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day.”

“I agree. It was fortunate that there were a few humdrum holidays thrown into the middle of the month. The children enjoyed Gingerbread House Day, and Father and Mary both enjoyed World Choral Day and International Tea Day.”

“It gave us a chance to rest up before Games Day on the 20th. And then I was so thankful that the 21st was on a Saturday, so I didn’t have to call out sick.”

“The children were thrilled to hear about Don’t Make Your Bed Day. I found it quite enjoyable as well, although it’s hard to make your bed when you don’t actually get up. And in addition to being a Saturday, the Winter Solstice gave us a bonus as the longest night of the year.”

Having worked their way to the present, they sighed at all the wonderful memories that they’d made. The clock chimed midnight and Catherine was just about to suggest that they try to get some sleep, when she felt Vincent’s hand drift down her back.

“Catherine, since it is officially Christmas, perhaps we should give each other one gift before we go to sleep.”

“I don’t know…have you been a good boy this year?”

He brought his lips to hers for a long kiss. “With all the practice I’ve been getting, I certainly hope so. Merry Christmas, Catherine.”
