APRIL 12th CHALLENGE
ANNIVERSARIES
NO WEDDING
by Nancy
No Manhattan cathedral
With rainbow-patterned columns
No doors thrown wide
To welcome wedding guests
A hallowed balcony
Dusk dark
Candlelit
This moonless night
No family
No friends
Crowding benches
Straining for a glimpse
Their world apart
Secret
Shared
In Love
No gilt-winged cherubs
Watch from lofty heights
No sculpted Saints
To witness all
Their vaulted ceiling
A felted sky
Living Angels hover
Bless the pair
No grand pipe organ
To swell the heart
Mist the eye
Here Comes the Bride
His voice her hymn
Her words his world
Their rhapsody
Love’s sweetest notes
No nervous Groom
With Groomsman at his side
No tuxedoed ushers
Seating latecomers
He stands alone
Humble and sure
No one but she
Will ever know his heart
No silver vested Priest
No acolytes in red
No toddling ring-bearer
No giddy flower girl
Rejoice
Attending universe
Confirm the wonder
Something there has never been
No tearful Maid of Honor
No Bridesmaids matched
No carpeted aisle
Petal-strewn and wide
Above a city
Near to Heaven
Their love brightens
The nighttime world
No Bride takes practiced step
No Father holds her hand
No lifting up the veil
No ritual at all
A warm embrace
A kiss bestowed
Love
Knows its home
There is no wedding here
This day
None that matters
Anyway
The marriage of their souls
A mystic joining
Preordained
Before Eternity began
When bands of gold may be exchanged
With vows expressed for all to see
The wedding will come later
This is their … anniversary
For you, Love

Nancy, I love this poem! What a beautiful and amazing way to contrast — and yet in some ways, blend — Above and Below, to emphasize how special and rare and right is the love of Vincent and Catherine. I am always amazed at your creative and heartfelt voice. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!
You’re very kind, Linda, and having you like something of mine is truly an honor.
Nancy- sigh – I wanted to comment when I could read this on my computer, to see the poem in the way you artistcally composed it, and it was worth the third read through. 🙂
I am always in awe of your work, but this seems extra … magical, important? This is how it would be, the rest is so … unneeded.
Some of my favorite passages:
-Dusk dark
-No sculpted Saints
To witness all
-His voice her hymn
-He stands alone
Humble and sure (Contrasted with nervous. He isn’t nervous or unsure. Not with her … sigh again…) <3
"Rejoice
Attending universe" – We do. We do.
Thank you for inspiring us and sharing with us. <3
Karen, I confess to being hesitant to return to see if there were any comments on this little piece, a word or two, perhaps, besides those from my dear Friends who HAD to find something nice to say. You’ve given me so many reasons to be glad I worked up the courage. Thank you very much for finding something to like and for being so generous in letting me know. Nancy

Simply divine! Thank you so much!

Karen, you are very kind in your praise. It’s funny to think this piece is ancient – I never thought it worthy of posting. Thank you for being so encouraging. Nancy
Oh, what a poem. No typical wedding, but when hearts are joined as one, that is all that truly is needed. Loved the verses “Their vaulted ceiling A felted sky Living Angels hover Bless the pair” and “He stands alone Humble and sure
No one but she Will ever know his heart” and “Above a city Near to Heaven Their love brightens The nighttime world”.
Oh be still my heart. This is such a beautiful poem. “Love does indeed know it’s home.” True love. The most purest kind. And the ending “The marriage of their souls A mystic joining Preordained Before Eternity began” A true Anniversary gift for Vincent and Catherine. Thank you Nancy.
PearlAnn, it means so much to have a writer of your gifts spend time praising my effort. Thank you for being so very kind to me. Nancy
Nancy, you always, always shine the brightest, warmest light on our couple. Words of crystal, as golden as honey. Thank you for this moment of sweet rejoicing.
Carole, dear Friend, would you believe it’s hard to accept your praise? You are, after all, such an extraordinary creator of masterpieces! That you could enjoy an effort of mine – humbling for sure. I am so grateful for you, your work, my place in your heart. Nancy
beautiful poem.. I have no words.. the connection of the hearts and souls of our beloved couple.. the only one in the whole world… the vision of the words from the poem brightens my world.
