UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

by Nancy

Despair
Clouds
Roils and
Darkens
Tunnel passages

Thoughts

He walks
And walks
Heavy steps
Pained
Compelled in misery

She can’t
She said
Can’t
Continue

Her
Pain
Cuts
Kills him

He
Can
May
Admit
Her complaint

Yet
What is there
For them

She has my heart
My every thought and prayer
Everything
I have

Still
She
Wants
That love
Beyond my ‘everything’
Beyond all I’ve pledged

Love

Unbounded

Love
That trusts her
With
That
Me
Of
Secret
Hidden places

Forbidden
Her

Forbidden
Her healing
Her
Unconditional love

That being
I fear
Cannot describe
Explain
Cannot bear
To show her

That
Me
I
Cannot love

How
Can she

__________

For you, Hank

  1. This poem is so beautiful in its sadness, so true in what it tells us even as we wish it weren’t so. You have such a gift for choosing exactly the right words to portray Vincent’s longing, his denial, his tragedy…while still giving us that candlelight of hope. Thank you, as ever, for sharing your vision with all of us.

    • You are soooo sweet and even kinder than sweet, Linda!

  2. I love poetry, but I’m not as good as Linda at putting into words what I feel when I read it. Still, I can confidently say that the words you write touch people deeply and paint a perfect picture of the character and his inner struggles. I wish I could create such wonders as your poems!
