THE BURDEN

by Nancy

originally published in the 2018 Conzine

I feel her sadness
This weight of secrets
Borne
On my account
And feeling
Hurt her more

She would be strong
Contained
Her sorrow held apart
Absolving me

If I could but grant that much

That’s when she smiles
And wonders on a sigh
What burden
Vincent mine
Alights so gently
Easy

To such grateful welcome

She kisses me

I have no answer

None but one

We love each other
