Soon after he turned fourteen, Devin left the tunnel community to find adventure, healing, and fulfillment in places he’d only dreamed of; yet he always knew his journey would someday lead him home again. As he traveled the world, he collected not only discoveries and experiences, but also stones and crystals whose attributes resonated within his soul and often evoked memories of people who claimed a special place in his heart.
When he finally returned to New York, he gave the stones to his family, describing how they aligned with his adventures. His tales enthralled those who had never forgotten him, had never given up hope that he would someday return to them. And when in time he left to wander the world again, his gift helped sustain his connection to the people he’d always love, the world he’d always call home.
Vincent housed the collection of stones in a special alcove in the Chamber of the Winds where they could be viewed and appreciated, and, as Devin hoped, contemplated for spiritual support and healing. As the months and years slid by, Vincent delighted in the sporadic delivery of yet another parcel from his brother, offering additions to the treasured gift and strengthening bonds of the heart.
As you visit this special place, we hope you’ll enjoy sharing moments of Devin’s journey and learning about the origins, lore, and spiritual significance of the stones he carried with him. They might inspire you to make them part of your life as well.
As we imagine them, Devin’s travels away from New York begin as he heads for Toronto, Canada. You can join him there and read the nine story segments in order, but you also might wish to discover what happened just before and after the Toronto portion of his journey. “A River So Long” by Carole W tells us of Devin’s earliest days in New York beyond the tunnel world and gives background about his approach to Canada. It is part of the September 25, 2022 Homecoming Challenge.
“Everything I Will Be” by Linda S Barth recounts Devin’s journey after leaving Toronto and returning to the US, eventually landing in St. Louis. It is part of the September 25, 2021 Anniversary Challenge.

Linda and Carole, thank you so much for these wonderful stories and artwork! Devin has seen so much of the world while running away from his own issues. He’s learned a lot, helped some people, gotten in and out of trouble, grounded himself in his collection of stones, and started to find a path back to himself and back home. He may never be able to truly LIVE in the Tunnels, but he can’t escape what they mean to him — a place to call HOME even when he is thousands of miles away.

We had such a good time working on this project together and I think I speak for both of us when I say it makes me (us) happy to know it’s found readers! Devin’s life after the tunnels has always been a subject of great curiosity. I’m betting he even has more to tell us one day!

As Carole said, we had a great time collaborating on bring Devin’s journey — spiritual and literal — to life. Carole’s artwork helped inspire the stories I imagined, and I was actually sad to see it come to an end. Maybe there will be more to Devin’s story someday.
