On a February morning in 1988 as passengers boarded a flight at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a man called Alex Watson vanished. And when the plane touched down thirteen hours later at JFK, Derek Sanders, who bore a noticeable likeness to the missing Alex, stood in line for Customs clearance.
By the time an over-priced cab ride had left the traveler at an Upper East Side hotel, Aussie-accented Derek Sanders also would disappear, and native New Yorker Jeff Radler would unpack his bags in a spacious room overlooking Central Park.
In the morning, he’d begin to reclaim what was his, from a storage room at a post office, from the city he still loved even as he’d run from it, from the life that still waited for him.
And soon, although he still was not entirely certain he could expect one more miracle to be granted him, another adventure, another story in a long and varied chronicle would begin. A story of promises kept, heartbreak healed, and a path once walked by only one, now marking the footsteps of two.
Once upon another time in the City of New York…
