DRABBLE

The melting wax from dozens of candles dripped and puddled. Everyone stared, aghast, as Mouse triumphantly carried the mess into the Dining Chamber.

Vincent swiftly blew out the guttering candles, but the damage was done. Elizabeth’s birthday cake was ruined.

Into the shocked silence, Father demanded, “Whatever possessed you to put Mouse in charge of the candles?!”

William muttered, “It’s a simple task. The children usually do it!”

Oblivious, Mouse crowed, “My idea! One candle for each year!” He shrugged. “Took time to light. Melted a little.”

Only Elizabeth laughed, delighted. “It’s very artistic! And I don’t like cake anyway!”
