DECEMBER HOLIDAYS

DECEMBER 3 ~ NATIONAL ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD DAY

Home

by Tunnel Writer

Zach fidgeted in his chair. He knew he was next, and he was nervous.

He and the other children had to write a report about home and read it out loud in class on December 3rd. He laughed at some of the funnier essays and sighed at the sadder ones.

Mine isn’t nearly good enough, he thought while biting his lip.

“Our last essay is by Zach.”

Zach took a deep breath, and stared at his essay for a moment. If only Vincent knew how many times he had thrown away his essay and had to start over. It’s now or never, he thought as he slowly walked to the front.

He stood in front of the class and began reading.

“Home isn’t just a place to sleep, eat and play. It’s a roof over your head to keep you dry when it’s raining outside, and toasty warm when the winter wind blows. Some have big houses, while others have small apartments. We have the best home of all. We’re safe and warm. I remember when I used to live on the streets with my mother. It was so cold, I would shiver all night. When we came here, I was so thankful for a warm place to sleep that I slept for two straight days.”

Zach took a small glance at Vincent, who nodded at the memory. He looked at his paper and continued. “Every night when I snuggle under the quilts, a new feeling of appreciation washes over me, and I can’t help but be thankful for my home, and for those who share it with me. The end.”

“I think we all feel the same as Zach,” Vincent said as he looked around at the nodding children.

“It’s lunchtime. Class dismissed.”
