Everyone has precious keepsakes that conjure memories of loved ones and special moments, outstanding adventures and turning points in our lives. They are signposts along pathways, gateways to bridges, keys to secret doors. They help keep us connected to who we were and who we have become, to people and places that mean so much to us.

Inspired by Crowmama’s beautiful portrait, our April 12th 2026 CABB Challenge is all about keepsakes. While the most iconic ones in the BatB world are Catherine’s rose and Vincent’s crystal, surely others living Below and Above have their own cherished mementoes. Perhaps it is something brought Below to link old and new lives, or an object too precious to leave behind. Perhaps it is an item found or gifted that evokes smiles and sighs or even tears.

We challenged writers to tell a story based on keepsakes and the people who treasure them. How did the person acquire it, what does it mean to them, and why are they unable to part with it – or perhaps feel they must let it go?

Once again, BatB fanfic writers dreamed up wonderful tales depicting several characters and the keepsakes that mean so much to them. When you read these stories – and one poem – you’ll discover possibilities about the characters we’ve all come to love. Perhaps a story or two will resonate with your own keepsake memories.
