ANNIVERSARY GIFTS

ANNIVERSARY DRABBLES

~ Catherine, Mouse’s Chamber, an Anniversary Gift ~

by Tasha

After dinner, he escorted Catherine below. Mouse had asked to see them. “Big project,” Mouse had declared.

Vincent kept his hand on her back as they walked. In Mouse’s chamber, they found Arthur – but no Mouse.

“A note,” Catherine said, reaching for a piece of paper bearing her name. She smiled, reading aloud, “Mouse gone on trip with Jamie. Please watch Arthur. Made special.”

They both investigated and found in the next chamber a bed. Not Mouse’s overstuffed mattress, but a four poster bed made up with luxurious linens and pillows.

“Jamie added a postscript. ‘Enjoy the privacy. Happy Anniversary.’”

Catherine entered into Mouse’s chamber and went in front of him as he was so dedicated to his job and didn’t see her. Mouse jumped to his feet.

Catherine saw an object and felt stunned: a music box representing the scene of Vincent and her dancing the waltz at Winterfest!

“Oh, Catherine, you have discovered Vincent’s surprise for your anniversary! He’ll get mad at me!”

“Don’t worry, Mouse, he will not. The music box is wonderful and will be a real surprise as you haven’t finished it yet, correct?” said Catherine, taking advantage of his friend’s naivete.

“Yes, Catherine, you are right!”

“See you later, Mouse”.

“See you later, Catherine. But what did you want…?”

“Nothing, Mouse, I’ve never been here,” said Catherine, winking…

Catherine’s Anniversary Gift
by Tunnel Muse

It’s Catherine’s and Vincent’s third anniversary. She wanted it private and cozy, with candles. Catherine remembered the room with the only door in the tunnels where Brian had been placed. A perfect location.

Picnic and cider in hand, she closed her Bond and got everything prepared. Food and candles lit, she opened her Bond to Vincent, letting him know her location.

Opening the door to the small room, he found Catherine with a smile and in all her glory. Handing him the ultrasound, her eyes sparkling, she replied, “Happy anniversary, darling.”

Astonished, Vincent replied, “Happy anniversary, my beautiful Catherine.”

Catherine was in Mouse’s chamber. Mouse grinned. “Did it.”

Catherine looked around the chamber. “Where is it?”

Mouse turned and walked over to a dresser, the top of which had lots of items. He opened a drawer and took out a toy carousel. “Hard to fix. Needed stuff,” Mouse said.

“Which you found.”

Mouse seemed pleased with himself. “Works now.” He handed it to her.

She saw the key on the side of the carousel and turned it. A melody played as the carousel revolved.

“Makes perfect anniversary gift from you to Vincent?”

“Yes, thank you, Mouse.”

It Takes a Village
by JoAnn Baca

Catherine saw the perfect gift for Vincent – an intricately inlaid portable writing desk – in the window of an antiques store as she rushed to a luncheon. But when she returned afterwards to buy it, it was gone.

Later, Below, she mentioned to Mary she was still looking for something special for Vincent, with their anniversary only days away.

Mouse waylaid her as she was leaving. He’d obviously eavesdropped. “Perfect gift! Promise!” Mouse’s expression was confident.

She followed him with desperate hope.

Amid the chaos of half-built mechanical “somethings” stood the antique writing desk.

Grateful, she didn’t ask.

He didn’t tell.

A big word, but he still remembered that long-ago time when Vincent taught him to sound out letters until they made sense.

Got it!  Anniversary!

Frowning, he read the card aloud. “Happy Anniversary, Mouse! Love, Catherine”

Must be a mistake. Vincent’s Catherine, not Mouse’s!

Still, a present should be opened…

Inside, a dazzling array of nuts and bolts, wire and twine, handtools of all sorts, leather work gloves, a pair of goggles. All for him! But why?

Another note:  “One year ago today, you rescued them with your courage and your love.”

Sometimes a touch too much is just right.
