AN ANNIVERSARY DRABBLE

by JoAnn Baca

“Wake up, sleepyhead.”

His eyelids fluttered open. The night still held fast, only one flickering candle pushing back the darkness.

“I know, it’s early. But…it’s ‘today’!”

He smiled. His unusual lips curved upwards more easily these days.

Warm arms wrapped around him, and eagerly he returned the embrace.

“Happy anniversary!”

Her lips found his. A deep kiss followed, thrilling him to his core. They lingered within it, savoring each other, the moment, the memories.

How long had it been since that golden evening? It didn’t matter. They had each other, and all was right with the world.

Always and forever.
